What I Wish I Knew Before Building My First Startup Website

We believed that all we needed when we created our first startup website was something that looked good and loaded fast.
Spoiler alert: we were mistaken.
In reality, we needed a strategic tool that could convert visitors, pitch our startup around-the-clock, and build trust.
Here are all the things we wish we had known before we pushed “Publish” on the initial draft.

1.Your website is more than just a design project. It’s a Resource for Businesses
We became so fixated on design that we forgot about function. Moving users toward a crucial action is what a startup website should excel at.
That might be:
- Making a waitlist
- Scheduling a product demo
- Scheduling a discovery call
Don’t just focus on how it looks. Ask:
“What do I want my visitors to do?”
2. Copywriting Converts More Than Code
It’s tempting to get deep into tech stacks and page transitions. But real users are asking:
- “What is this? Why should I care? How do I get started?”
- Strong, clear messaging beats fancy layouts.
- Every word on your website needs to be justified or it should be worthy of it’s place.
Quick copy tip:
Replace “We offer solutions” with “We help startups launch products 2x faster — with less stress.”
3. You Can Start With One Great Page
You don’t need 7 tabs in your nav bar on day one.
In fact, some of the most successful startups begin with a one-page site that focuses on:
- The issue you resolve
- The benefit you provide
- A strong call to action
This gives consumers a clear next step, speeds up loading, and keeps your content concise.
4. Your Website’s Speed Is More Important Than You May Imagine
Everything is impacted by site speed, including user trust, SEO ranking, and bounce rate.
It didn’t seem like a huge deal. until I noticed that my photos were too heavy and that visitors were leaving.
Be careful to:
- Reduce image size;
- Select a dependable, quick host;
- Steer clear of very animated content.
Keep in mind that users won’t wait. They will click off.
5. You are designing for them, not for yourself.
You might like dark mode and serif fonts. However, your audience may require more visual clarity, mobile-first layouts, or large font.
Prioritize your users:
- Before deciding on a layout, Conduct user interviews with prospective users
- See how they interact with your wireframes.
- Utilize analytics software such as Hotjar to monitor behavior after launch.
Personal preference is subordinated to actual input.
6. Construct With Growth in Mind
Consider scale even while starting a minimal MVP:
- Is your CMS capable of managing future landing pages and a blog?
- Is it possible for your design system to evolve alongside the product?
- Can you monitor performance indicators right away?
It saves hours later to plan with the future in mind.
7. Fundamental SEO Big Wins Early On Afterwards
SEO was a “Phase 2” phenomenon, in my opinion. Not at all. Early on, a few minor adjustments have a big impact:
- Employ appropriate title tags (H1, H2)
- Include meta descriptions.
Use pertinent terms organically, such as startup website development and MVP websites; optimize photos using alt text.
It’s not necessary to stuff keywords. Don’t worry about search engines; just write for people.
Last Thought
In addition to serving as your digital front door, your company website frequently serves as your initial sales call, investor pitch, and customer interaction.
Thus, handle it carefully. Start out easy. Speak with your users. Iterate quickly.
Now, what we would do differently:
- Prioritize message clarity
- Start with a single, powerful call to action.
- Consider results when designing, not simply looks.
